‘Natural’ beauty products – how to spot the real ones from the fake

“100% natural”, “organic beauty” and “natural ingredients” – all terms you’re probably familiar with. ‘Natural’ has become somewhat of a buzzword in the skincare and cosmetics industry in recent years, with figures showing that 73% of women aged 18-34 believe the term “all-natural” to be a key decision making term. However, amongst all the buzz has come a lot of scepticism also – are all these products really as ‘natural’ as they say they are? Unfortunately, the answer is no.

What does ‘natural’ actually mean?

The term ‘natural’ stretches far and wide and has a different meaning to everyone, making it difficult to actually define – hence why so many brands are able to use it so freely. In fact, even the FDA website has not established a regulatory definition for this term in cosmetic labelling!

Realistically, most beauty products go through some sort of processing, however not all beauty products are created equal. With this in mind, we’ve summed up some of the key things to consider when looking for a truly natural beauty product:

1.Avoid synthetic chemicals

Despite claiming to be ‘natural’, many of these products include synthetic chemicals. Common examples include parabens, phthalates and formaldehyde.  Here at Vita-You, we stay far away from these and you can shop our chemical-free range here.

2.Stay away from fragranced products
Not only can fragranced products irritate the skin, but they’re also packed with artificial ingredients. However, these aren’t always clearly labelled; so if you’re unsure always go for a clearly labelled fragrance-free product. All Vita-You products clearly label their ingredients and contain natural essential oils, such as lavender, with no artificial chemical fragrances. To take a look for yourself, click here.

3.Keep it simple
If a product contains a long list of ingredients, it’s very likely that some of those ingredients are not natural. Vita-You keeps its products simple by using only a handful of natural ingredients. Shop the range here.

4. If you aren’t familiar with the ingredients, why are you buying it?
As a general rule of thumb, you should know what the ingredients are and why they are being used.  If you don’t, then why are you buying it?  Thankfully, all Vita-You products only contain natural botanicals well known for their therapeutic and nourishing components, such as olive oil, aloe vera, evening primrose oil and tea tree oil; which are well regarded in the beauty industry as excellent treatments for your skin.

Ultimately, it’s all about doing what’s best for you and your skin. Natural beauty products are great, but not necessarily as effective for everyone. However, whether you decide to go natural or not, always do your research! To learn more about Vita-You products, click here.
